According Wikipedia definition, Lepidium meyenii,
known commonly as MACA, is an herbaceous biennial plant of the crucifer
family native to the high Andes of Peru around Lake Junin. It is grown for its
fleshy hypocotyls (actually a fused hypocotyls and taproot), which is used as a
root vegetable,a medicinal herb, and a supposed aphrodisiac.
Maca is a traditional herb that has
undergone a huge increase in demand in other countries. It has been used by
indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Andes for several thousands of years. There
is evidence at one archaeological site of it being cultivated as far back as
1600 BC.
Traditional uses include boosting
the immune system and balancing hormones in women. It was also used to
treat tuberculosis and sexual disorders and for boosting
potency in men. Women and men both use it for a fertility aid. It
was taken as well as a way to counteract exhaustion, both physical and mental.
Although it was used traditionally for
all these qualities, much like Ginseng, its primary use in other countries has
been for sexual enhancement or dysfunction. In addition to using it for
its effect on sexual potency, it is used in the United States and Europe for
its ability to boost stamina, increase endurance and enhance the memory.
Studies have also shown that the plant can help deal with the effects of
aging on the mental and physical functioning of the body and to help
the body to deal with the effects of stress.
The plant grows only in high altitudes
of approximately 3600 - 4200 meters in harsh conditions where other plants are
unable to survive. The root has high nutritional in protein, carbohydrates,
vitamins and minerals. Of the minerals, it is particularly high in iodine and
iron.

Chemically
Maca root contains significant amounts of amino acids, carbohydrates, and
minerals including calcium, phosphorous, zinc, magnesium, iron, as well as
vitamins B1, B2, B12, C and E. Peruvian Maca also includes a number of
glycosides.
As a
nutritional supplement, Peruvian Maca has generalized tonic effects on the
biochemical functioning of the human body. Chief among these effects is the
enhancement of endocrine function. The endocrine system includes all of the
glands, and the hormones they secrete, that exist in the body and that
control such conditions as fertility, sexual function, digestion, brain
and nervous system physiology, and energy levels. Hormonal regulation is
responsible for all of the physiological attributes that enable us to enjoy
the myriad sensations of being vibrantly alive, including those related to
sexual arousal, physical activity and mental-emotional states of being. Maca
root has also been called an adaptogen, which means that it increases
the body's ability to defend itself against both physical and mental
weakening, hence potential illness. It is believed it achieves this by
supporting adrenal and pituitary gland health, both of which underlie proper
endocrine function.
Another
well known and proven property of Maca is its benefits in male fertility.
Maca has been proven to increase the sperm count. It is also said to
aid in male sexual enhancement. Scientists do know that the chemical arginine
is found in high amounts in maca. Arginine does increase sperm production.
The chemical histidine is said to be released during the height of the sexual
experience. Maca has high amounts of this chemical. This is why many believe
that maca is a natural aphrodisiac.
